I am wanting to undertake a project that causes me to get the heebie jeebies when I think about it. I've pondered it for some time as in years and actually did a preliminary sketch for the first one.
I want to make a series of quilts inspired and based on the novels of Toni Morrison! Similiar to how August Wilson wrote a play for each decade of the 20th century.
The presence of me talking out loud here on my blog translates to me becoming more obsessed about it.
What frightens me is how large I envision each quilt...it would mean working with larger than comfortable size quilts and risk completing a top only to mess it up in the quilting. I could hand quilt or have a long armer take that on but I think the stitching is too important for this project considering I don't know a long armer who shares a twin mind with me.
If I took it on, it would be a soul/sole devotion and leave little room for little else inside my studio.
Another question I posed to myself was 'would all the quilts gave to be the same in process'; all applique, painted, image transfers, combination, half the series one process, the other half another process.
One thing I do know for sure is if it has haunted me thid long, I probably need to at least start on the first one.
Go for it! If you've got the vision, and have begun the sketching, you are already 1/3rd of the way there. I believe with your creativity, once you decide to commit tot the first quilt the process will speak to your soul and tell you which way to go! I've confidence in you.

Thanks sis! How does a quilt get made? One stitch at a time. I'm going to do the first one and see where it goes from there.
DeleteI agree with "bell4953"---you never know till you try! It might actually be easier than you think! You really have very little to lose but oh so much to gain! Just be sure and post (when you can) so I can enjoy the process "with" you!

DeleteYou sound a little unsure of yourself as far as the quilt making is concerned. Remember quilts come in all sizes and with all types of fiber, and or paper and other objects. I suggest keeping it somewhat small so as not to be discouraged in completing it. I will be waiting to see just what you come up with. GO FOR IT!!!
ReplyDeleteI join the chorus of 'go for it'... the scariness can be a signal that it's a place you really belong. Perhaps the America sketches were in some way preparation? My one budinsky comment is -- why big?! Why can't these renderings be done in a scale you are eager to execute? Isn't it enough that the scope of the subject is BIG (perhaps even daunting) and the amount of soul / energy the project would consume also a challenge?

ReplyDeleteMy one question to you is about scale. Why big? Isn't the contour of the project challenge enough (perhaps even daunting)? The demands it will make on you as an artist -- isn't that challenge enough without also working in a scale that feels daunting?!
