    I don't know, but it has beautiful bark.

    hey I have been checking periodically since your email. Don't know offhand but I sent the link to this post to a botanically inclined friend who has spent a lot of time in Africa. It *is* really beautiful...

    It does have beautiful bark. Size and general shape can help with identification. Can you get a picture of the entire tree?

    I've googled both the shag bark hickory and birch images and it comes very close to resembling the birch trees. I love it!

    i was going to say birch but i thought it should have more black... but then again i am not a tree expert....

    well if it is commonly called papyrus tree it would make sense for it to be in the birch family. No way is it shagbark hickory though. Have been doing a bit of googling while I wait for a reply from the person I thought could be of help. It is elusive!

    It looks very much like a birch tree.If you google birch bark images you will see many similar trees
