What does liberation and joy look like to me?

Ever have a piece that makes you feel totally free and empowered while working on it? This is that piece for me. I was excited every step of the way!  I need to finish it so that it can be hung for display week after next at the 2nd Annual African American Quilt Design Symposium.  The title is Inner Liberation named after the sense of freedom and joy I felt when working on it.  This piece reflects where I want to grow as a quilt artist and I was on a natural high while working on it.

It is a commercial discharge fabric heavily quilted and couched with silk threads, a pieces of painted tulle, foil, glitter paint wash, and a little bit of shiva paint stick in white.  I am trying to figure out how to attach the copper wire with the dangling metal circles from the bottom of this piece.  After that I will attach a sleeve. I considered attaching some of the metal circles in clusters on the surface but they wasn't as appealing as I hoped so nixed that idea.  I thought about having it framed in a shadow box later without the glass so that it can still be touched.  I made 2 postcards just like this after I started this piece and plan to do another one similiar but in a rectangle about 12"x32" or so.  This piece measures 16.25"x16.25" with uneven edges.  I just attached the backing after not touching it for about a month. I had to decide if it was completely finished with layers and it is, because it didn't ask me for more.

I've got to go pick up my petites from the library.  Peace.

  1. Girl, I was disturbed that I got cut off from talking to you today by my mother's presence! This piece has photographed so well because there is such a tactile sensation upon seeing it. You know my visual art talents are extremely limited.. so for ME to get from the picture the desire to reach out and touch the fabric, you could say the fabric/color combination is pretty intense! I don't know if it's your use of copper wire (love copper) with the washers combined with the richness/texture of the quilt, but this is truly beautiful and vividly alive to me.. don't you dare charge less than it's worth, you hear me??? We've gotta talk about this piece because it's phenomenal Karoda.. I'm blown away.. :O You cannot doubt what you are meant to be doing with this piece in front of you.. The inspiration that worked through you is evident. I hope you are basking in this girl, because it's gorgeous and glorious from my end!!

  4. I love this, it's so textural. The colors sing to me. And the copper washers are the perfect finishing touch, not too much, just right.

  7. Very cool, K. I like the copper washers just as sculpture without being on the quilt, but of course more is better...and the fiber piece is fantastic. Great textures and colors. I am glad to hear how you described how it affected you. Yippeee.

  8. I love the textures and very rich coloration. The fiber and metal make a wonderful contrast.
Love your silks that you just did, too. Went through all the pictures and it looks like you really accomplished a lot surrounded by other artists.

  9. I love the colors and the way it shines. All those textures! I thought the copper discs were jewelry at first, they are so pretty. It's always nice when you get lost and emotional in a piece.
